San Rafael murder suspect arrested in Hayward

A 30-year-old man was arrested in Hayward this afternoon on suspicion of murdering his mother in her San Rafael home, police said.

The body of Eleanor Carlson, 72, was found inside her home at 215 C St. around 4 a.m. Monday, San Rafael police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher said.

Her son Richard Leroy Carlson was labeled a person of interest in the case following the discovery of his mother’s body, and authorities this morning confirmed he was a suspect.

Richard Carlson was taken into custody without incident at about 2:50 p.m. in downtown Hayward after detectives developed a lead that he might be in that area, San Rafael police Lt. Dan Fink said.

He has been transported to the San Rafael Police Department for an interview and is expected to be booked into the Marin County jail on suspicion of murder later today, according to Fink.

Richard Carlson was reportedly involved in a domestic violence incident with his mother in January. A police report on the incident was sent to the Marin County District Attorney’s Office for review.

Marin County District Attorney Ed Berberian declined to comment on the domestic violence investigation Monday.

San Rafael police also said Monday that Eleanor Carlson obtained a temporary restraining order against her son after the January incident but it had not been served.

Police later said the order was served on Richard Carlson on Wednesday.

An autopsy on Eleanor Carlson was conducted late Monday, but police have not released her cause of death.
