Two San Mateo men suspected of attacking a victim with pipes and bats earlier this month were arrested Wednesday, officials said.

Kenneth Estrada Salazar, 18, and Fredy Jose Hernandez, 20, were arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon at about 5 p.m. Wednesday during a traffic stop in San Mateo, police said.

The victim, who suffered visible injuries and required medical assistance, was assaulted on March 4 at about 4:45 p.m. in the 300 block of North Delaware Street, according to police.

Salazar and Hernandez were identified as suspects in the attack by the San Mateo Police Department’s Neighborhood Response Team.

The team, a four-person unit dedicated to gang enforcement and neighborhood problems, assisted with the investigation because officers suspected the attack was gang-related.

The two men were booked into San Mateo County Jail, police said.
