San Mateo man dies of injuries after collision

An unidentified elderly man who was run over by a car while walking in a crosswalk Monday night on El Camino Real died Tuesday of his injuries.

The victim, a 70-year-old man from San Mateo, was crossing El Camino Real shortly after 7 p.m. on the south side of Chapin Avenue when he was struck by what witnesses described as a black car resembling a convertible Chevrolet Camaro.

The driver, who police said is from Daly City, was driving in the right lane heading north, and stopped after the collision. She was questioned by police afterward and released.

Burlingame police Cmdr. Brad Floyd declined to provide more details about the driver. Floyd wouldn’t reveal whether the driver was speeding or running a red light, or if the victim entered the street mistakenly. He would not say if an arrest is imminent if the driver is found at fault.

"We’re just starting the investigation," he said. "We really need to be careful in protecting the involved parties on every side."

The victim was taken to Stanford University Medical Center and was pronounced dead Tuesday at 12:54 a.m. The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office is not releasing the name of the victim so that the family could first be notified.

Witnesses said the driver’s windshield was dented from the impact.

Juan Gonzalez, a manager at a nearby Mollie Stone’s Market, said the victim’s sister dropped the man off at the store with the understanding that he would walk back to her nearby home after shopping. Twenty minutes after the accident, the sister — described to be in her 60s — returned to the store and began asking employees if they had seen her brother. She later found police at the crash scene.

A tree about five feet in diameter sits next to the crosswalk button on the corner and may have impeded the vision of the victim and the driver. Gonzalez, who has worked at the store for 13 years, said traffic accidents are routine.

Burlingame police are seeking witnesses and request that they call (650) 777-4100.
