San Francisco woman scammed out of $19,000

Even after being told it was a bad idea, an 82-year-old Outer Sunset district woman lost $19,000 to a phone scammer who claimed her grandson was locked up in a Mexican jail and needed bail cash, Taraval Station police said.

After the scammer called her last week with the bogus claim, the woman went to the Western Union on Irving Street.

“They would not wire the money because they felt something was wrong,” police said.

Then the con told the woman to go to Safeway to wire the money. She did.

“When she called her grandson a few days later, she learned from her daughter-in-law that her grandson did not go to Mexico,” police said.
