While the Giants and Royals settle things on the field, how do San Francisco and Kansas City compare?

Founded

San Francisco: 1776

Kansas City: 1830s

Population

San Francisco: 837,442, fourth-largest city in California

Kansas City: 459,787, largest city in Missouri

City monikers

San Francisco: The City by the Bay. Also: Baghdad by the Bay, The City, Fog City

Kansas City: Paris of the Plains. Also: City of Fountains, BBQ Capital of the World, Cowtown

Food

San Francisco: Dungeness crab. There is nothing more tasty than fresh Dungeness crab — regardless of how you like to prepare it. It is seasonal, so if it is not available, go grab a Mission burrito.

Kansas City: Barbecue. Smoked beef, chicken or pork and barbecue sauce. Excellent sauce and finger-licking good, but not diverse enough.

State

San Francisco: California. Definitely in California and a very international city.

Kansas City: Missouri or Kansas? Technically, there are two Kansas Cities, neighboring each other in each state. The Royals call the Missouri city home.

Music festival

San Francisco: Outside Lands. This year's lineup featured Tom Petty, Kanye West, The Killers, and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.

Kansas City: Wakarusa Festival. Look up "Wakarusa Festival Kansas City" — as promoted on K.C.'s Chamber of Commerce website — and you come up with some festival in Arkansas featuring Bigfoot as a mascot. You have to leave the state and it's not across the river in Kansas? No thanks.

Movie

San Francisco: "Dirty Harry." Clint Eastwood is a rogue cop who gets things done in whatever way he feels.

Kansas City: "Wizard of Oz." A timeless classic — especially if you sync up a certain Pink Floyd album. Wait, Dorothy and Toto are from Kansas!

Iconic landmark

San Francisco: Golden Gate Bridge. An internationally recognized span that has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World.

Kansas City: Liberty Memorial. Dedicated to the soldiers who gave their lives in World War I and home to the National World War I Museum.
