San Francisco startup helps you become a real man

In late May, 35-year-old Kyle Ingham launched The Distilled Man, a San Francisco startup that offers classes that teach various “man skills” that are being forgotten by current generations. The Distilled Man offers four courses: grilling, poker, wine and guitar. For more info, visit

So, how did this brainchild of yours come about? It’s all about giving guys skills of the gentlemanly arts. It all kind of started with the grilling class. I’ve grown up all my life not knowing how to grill. And all of a sudden, I was sitting at my 9-to-5 job with the burning urge to grill. The best way to describe it is that my biological-grilling clock went off.

With the classes being advertised for the gentleman, do women ever enroll? We find that a lot of women take our classes. I would say they’re about 30 to 40 percent women. And couples really enjoy the classes.

Were you scared to quit your ad-agency job to pursue this? Absolutely. I had wanted to do this idea for a couple of years. Then I made a note to myself that I would quit my day job within a year, or have enough money to quit my day job. I ended up doing that. ... And my girlfriend was really supportive.
