San Francisco soldier dies in Afghanistan

Flags were flown at half-mast at the state Capitol in Sacramento Tuesday to honor Army Sgt. David H. Gutierrez, a San Francisco soldier who died Christmas Day. Gutierrez, 35, was killed by an improvised explosive device near the base in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Gutierrez was the third soldier to call San Francisco home who has been killed in Iraq or Afghanistan since 2001, according to a database kept by the Los Angeles Times.

Army Pvt. Keith J. Moore, 28, and Cpl. Christopher D. Rose, 21, are the other soldiers from San Francisco who have been killed in action.
