San Francisco cab driver not toying around with would-be crooks

A courageous cabbie likely breathed a sigh of relief when he grabbed a thief’s gun and realized it was only a toy in the Western Addition district Monday, police said.

The suspects, described only as two men in their 50s, got into the cab and asked the 34-year-old driver to take them to O’Farrell and Biedeman streets. When they arrived around 9:40 p.m., one of the crooks pulled out what appeared to be a handgun while the other simulated a pistol, police said.

With a burst of courage, the cabbie grabbed the gun, which he realized was a toy. The driver then fled the cab and called cops.

One of the suspects fled the scene while the other stayed and rummaged through the cab, cops said. That crook was subsequently arrested, they said.

The incident marks the second time this month a cab driver has been held up at that intersection.
