San Francisco Arts Commission director Luis Cancel to resign

Arts Commission Executive Director Luis Cancel is expected to hand in his resignation as the head of the department tasked with providing money to artists, cultural centers and the San Francisco Symphony.

Cancel has notified commissioners of his resignation, though he has yet to tell Mayor Ed Lee. He says he is quitting so that he can move back to New York, but he has also come under increasing fire from arts commissioners about spending too much time in Rio de Janeiro.

Lee said Wednesday that he had yet to speak with Arts Commission President P.J. Johnston about the matter. He also thanked Cancel for his service.

He is the third high-profile employee to resign from the “city family” in as many weeks. SFMTA Director Nathaniel Ford called it quits in June and the Mayor’s Office of Housing director, Doug Shoemaker, is taking a job with Mercy Housing California, a low-income housing nonprofit.
