San Diego fugitive crashes into police car

A fugitive wanted in a San Diego gang crackdown has been arrested after crashing into a police car.

San Diego police said Thursday that 29-year-old John Atkinson rear-ended the police car at a stop sign on a highway off-ramp. The collision comes one day after officers tried to find him in a gang sweep.

Atkinson is one of 119 people named in federal indictments and criminal complaints unsealed Wednesday in the gang crackdown. He and 14 others were at-large after officers swept San Diego County in morning raids.

Lt. Jerry Hara tells U-T San Diego (http://bit.ly/AbNyEI ) that the police officer's car spun into an embankment. The officer complained of pains and went to a hospital. Atkinson went to a hospital for evaluation.
