San Carlos author pens first feature film, ‘Love on the Line’

Dublin-born writer Bernadette McCarthy now lives in San Carlos and founded the production company Irish Dream Films. McCarthy just completed her first feature film, titled “Love on the Line.”

What inspired you to write and direct this film? I started to write something on online dating, and this emerged on the page and I went with it. It’s a story about sisters from Ireland. The online dating is now just a backdrop.

How is online dating a backdrop? One of the characters is a sociologist doing research on online dating and discovers her husband is on it. I wanted to showcase how the World Wide Web and access on online dating creates this supermarket full of people and it is changing how people date and relate.

You filmed it in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Why? The whole of the shoot happened in San Francisco and Half Moon Bay. ... I wanted a real signature of San Francisco because we plan to distribute in Ireland and the U.S. San Francisco — the bridge, the Transamerica building — is so identifiable globally.

Have you always been a writer? I’ve always been passionate about film, storytelling, acting and writing. I wanted to do more but it wasn’t conducive to supporting two kids. I did a lot of theater in San Francisco. I was in a writing club and they were telling me it was a good story and I should do something with it. Enough people said that, so I finally did.
