Sammy Hagar returns with supergroup’s latest ‘Chickenfoot III’

Oh, that wacky Sammy Hagar!

Yes, we understand that he likes the vibrant color red, and just can’t drive 55, even though stop signs are, themselves, painted red. But now his sense of humor reaches zany new heights with the title of his sophomore effort with local combo Chickenfoot.

“We’re calling the album “Chickenfoot III”,” he says, “because it’s so good, the songs are so tight, it’s like we jumped right past having to make a second record.”

The supergroup — featuring Hagar on vocals, Joe Satriani on guitar, ex-Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and drummer Chad Smith — will issue “III” in a special 3-D package Sept. 27 via eOne Music, with the advance single “Big Foot” out Aug. 2.

The disc follows their eponymous Gold-certified debut from 2009, was produced by AC/DC-Metallica vet Mike Fraser, and — despite its playful moniker — marks a more serious songwriting maturity for the group.

On the ballad “Come Closer,” for instance, they flipped the script, with Hager penning the lyrics first in their entirety, and Satriani then setting them to music, Elton John/Bernie Taupin style.

The track listing is: “Last Temptation,” “Alright, Alright,” “Different Devil,” “Up Next,” “Lighten Up,” “Come Closer,” “Three And A Half Letters,” “Big Foot,” “Dubai Blues” and “Something Going Wrong.”

Tune into for more.
