Sacred Heart honored at state Capitol

The state champion Sacred Heart Cathedral girls’ basketball team was honored by San Francisco Assemblymembers Mark Leno and Fiona Ma at the state Capitol on Thursday.

"Over the last few months, the Lady Irish captured the heart of San Francisco," Leno said. "Despite a midseason tragedy, the team persevered with hard work and determination and made our city proud."

Said Ma: "The legislature can learn a lot from the amazing accomplishment of these student-athletes. "When you work together as a team — anything is possible."

The Irish, who finished the season as the consensus No. 1 team in the nation, had their season interrupted when the father of star junior Tierra Rogers was killed Jan. 12 during halftime of a game against Mitty at Sacred Heart. After returning to action, the Irish completed their unbeaten season, capped by their third straight state championship with a win over Magnolia of Anaheim in the Division III final. They have won 56 straight games, including defeating the state’s other four state champions.
