Sacred Heart Cathedral leads top-heavy WCAL

Mitty, St. Ignatius and Sacred Heart Cathedral — ranked among the best in the state, the West Catholic Athletic League can easily stake its claim as one of California’s premier girls’ basketball circuits.

Mitty returns point guard Danielle Robinson, the league’s reigning Player of the Year, and St. Ignatius features a potent 1-2 combo in center Nicole Canepa and guard Britney Blythe.

Sacred Heart Cathedral will look to defend its WCAL and Division IV state titles with a deep, athletic team led by versatile forwards Jazmine Jackson, The Examiner’s Player of the Year last season, and Tierra Rogers.

Here is a preview of The City teams (in alphabetical order):

SACRED HEART CATHEDRAL (8-1): Despite losing starting point guard Faihza Hill to a season-ending knee injury, the Irish look as formidable as ever. In addition to Jackson and Rogers inside, coach Brian Harrigan can rely on guards Ki-Shawna Moore and Lauren Bell, who are explosive scorers.

ST. IGNATIUS (9-2): The Wildcats, winners of five straight, are riding high coming off a championship in their own Leo LaRocca Sand Dune Classic. Center Nicole Canepa gets it done on the inside for SI and guards Britney Blythe and Maggie McCarthy provide the firepower from the perimeter.
