Ryan Vogelsong threw off the mound at AT&T Park for the first time since May 20 on Saturday and could begin his rehab assignment in rookie league on Tuesday.

Vogelsong tossed 33 pitches to instructor Shawon Dunston before the Giants' showdown with the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks, throwing all of his pitches in what manager Bruce Bochy called "a good outing."

"I thought he looked good," Bochy said. "I'll check on him a little bit later, if he's fine, there's a good chance he could in Arizona [on] Tuesday in a game."

After Vogelsong throws for the Arizona League Giants, he'll move up to Class-A San Jose before heading off to Double-A Richmond while the big club heads east for a trip to Philadelphia and Tampa Bay on July 29.

Bochy said Vogelsong will gradually work up to throwing 80 to 85 pitches and he could rejoin the Giants' rotation as early as Aug. 9.

"If he looks great, then we either give him one more start or activate him," Bochy said.

Crawford sidelined: Bochy held shortstop Brandon Crawford out of the starting lineup on Saturday because of swelling in his left foot. Crawford was spiked by Diamondbacks pitcher Heath Bell while running out a groundball in the bottom of the eighth inning of Friday night's game.

"He's day-to-day right now," Bochy said.

Crawford did come in to pinch hit late in Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks.

Arias progresses: Joaquin Arias could return to the Giants' lineup by the middle of next week.

Arias was placed on the 15-day disabled list on July 8 after undergoing an emergency appendectomy. The utility man is eligible to return on Tuesday.

"He's doing well," Bochy said. "He hit some off the tee today, he took a few ground balls, so he's on his way. He's feeling good."
