Rockfall closes major road into Yosemite park

A rockfall has closed off indefinitely a major access road into Yosemite National Park.

Some boulders fell shortly around 11:30 p.m. Sunday onto Big Oak Flat Road, the continuation of Highway 120 into Yosemite Valley. It's the main route into the park from the San Francisco Bay area.

Officials say the park remains open. Visitors who want to access the valley must use Highway 41 from Fresno or Highway 140 from Merced.

The rockfall took place as a storm brought more than 6 inches of rain and snow to the park over the weekend.

On Saturday, strong winds knocked a tree onto a tent cabin, killing a park employee. Officials say 27-year-old Ryan Hiller of North Carolina worked there as a part-time ranger.
