Riordan rebounds from first loss of year

It took a little less than two minutes for the Riordan boys’ basketball team to erase the memory of Tuesday’s 54-51 loss to Serra.

That’s how long it took Riordan to race out to a 9-0 lead over Bellarmine on Thursday and the host Crusaders never let up in crushing the Bells 66-27 in a West Catholic Athletic League game.

With the score 19-3 at the end of the first and the game never in doubt, Riordan (14-1,3-1 WCAL) cruised the rest of the way. When the final gun sounded, Riordan was looking at a 39-point win. Bellarmine (9-6, 2-2) was looking at a long ride home.

Rob Jones led three Riordan scorers in double figures with 15 points. He also led all players in rebounds with 11 despite sitting the entire fourth quarter. Richie Forslund had two 3-pointers to go with his 10 points and Jorge Camacho also scored 10. It was Riordan’s defense, however, that set the tone early in the dominant first period.

Victor Bull scored 20 points as the Wildcats (13-1, 4-0) topped the Lancers (10-5, 1-3) in a WCAL game.

After struggling with the Lancers’ speed during the first quarter, the Wildcats went on a 19-10 run in the second period and led 29-22 at halftime.

The Lancers then put together a run of their own when Robert Bow (16 points) hit four consecutive 3-pointers to tie the game 41-41 with 1:30 left in the third quarter. But once again, St. Ignatius displayed its ability to recover, with Paul Toboni (16 points) and Bull combining for 14 points in the fourth quarter.

"We knew we could keep going inside," St. Ignatius coach Tim Reardon said. "That’s what saved us."
