Riordan falls in OT

The Riordan football team took the big challenge in its season opener and met it quite well. Unfortunately, the Crusaders came away on the wrong end of the final score.
Henry Woods scored on three 1-yard touchdown runs, including one on the opening possession of overtime, as Archbishop Murphy of Everett, Wash., escaped with a 21-14 victory over Riordan on Friday in the High School Football Tour.
The Crusaders had a chance to tie the game in overtime, but fumbled the ball into the end zone on their ensuing possession and the Wildcats recovered to end the game. Unlike California, where regular-season games end in ties, Nevada rules put the ball on the 10-yard line and give each team a chance to score until someone wins.
Riordan and Murphy traded touchdowns, with Woods scoring in the first and third quarters. The Crusaders countered with Darius Bell’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Cannon in the second quarter to tie it 7-7 and Osa Aigbuza’s 7-yard TD run in the fourth quarter to make it 14-14.
Murphy has gone 37-3 over the past three seasons, outscoring its opponents 424-127. While Riordan is coming off a 4-6 showing in coach Mike Langridge’s debut season, the Crusaders more than stood their ground against the Washington power. Murphy outgained Riordan 247-221.
Cannon, a cornerback on defense, and linebacker Danny Curtin each had 11 tackles for the Crusaders, while Cannon followed up his nine-interception season of a year ago with his first of this season.
