Ridership, on-time performance down for Caltrain in January

Ridership on Caltrain dropped by 6.2 percent in January compared to last year at this time, continuing a string of dwindling passenger periods that have contributed to an overall drop of nine percent this fiscal year, which ends on June 30.

The regional commuter agency recorded a total of 920,103 passengers in January, more than 80,000 fewer than January of 2009. In the seven months of this fiscal year, ridership is down by nearly 700,000 passengers compared to last year’s totals.

Caltrain’s on-time performance also suffered in January, according to department documents. Caltrain vehicles recorded a 94.8 percent on-time performance rate, a 2.3 percent drop from last January’s tally, and .2 percent lower than the agency’s desired goal of 95 percent.
