Richmond man shot in face in apparent mugging

A 59-year-old man was shot in the face and hand this morning in what appears to be a mugging gone bad, Richmond police Lt. Mark Gagan said.

The victim was leaving his house in the 1400 block of Mariposa Avenue in Richmond’s Annex neighborhood at 6:23 a.m. to go to work when two suspects approached him in a vehicle.

As the victim walked to his car, a man got out of a vehicle and told the victim he needed directions. When the victim looked up, he saw that the man had a gun, Gagan said.

The victim struggled with the man, and the gun went off several times, striking the victim in the face and hand, Gagan said. The two suspects then fled the scene and the victim called for help. His injuries were serious but not considered life threatening.

"The victim’s resistance appears to have escalated the incident," Gagan said.

Police say they believe the two suspects were trying to rob the victim when he fought back.
