Ribbon-cutting held for new East Bay Target store

A new Target store is set to open today with a celebration that includes both the Oakland and Emeryville communities.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony this afternoon for the area's first Target store will be attended by both cities' mayors, Oakland's Jean Quan and Emeryville's Nora Davis.

The Oakland-Emeryville East Target Store is located at 1555 40th St. in Emeryville, but the city border cuts through the store's parking lot, Target spokeswoman Donna Egan said.

"They're sharing the tax revenues," Egan said.

The 140,000-square-foot store does not have a full grocery section, but basic staples will be available including dairy, fruits and vegetables, and meats, Egan said.

The store opening comes after two years of planning, which Egan said is "pretty quick."

"We're really excited to be able to open this week," Egan said.

The reception was scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., followed by a 4:30 p.m. ribbon cutting.

The store will open Wednesday, with the official grand opening scheduled for Sunday.
