Businesses and residents in the South Beach and Mission Bay neighborhoods are launching a new campaign to combat crime.
The group will meet Monday at 6 p.m. to discuss strategies to make the area safer. Specifically, the group wants to target the area bounded by Harrison, Fifth, Berry Streets and the Embarcadero.
One of the ideas the group is considering is whether to organize a community patrol, using unpaid citizens, modeled after the successful Castro Community on Patrol program. Also, the group wants to send out local crime alerts to merchants and residents.
“I live and work in that area, and many of us recognize it’s unreasonable to expect our city police department to meet all of our community needs and concerns,” Ken Craig, who helped organize the meeting, said in a statement.
