Republicans support Tony Hall, not Ed Lee

There have been several letters and stories claiming that San Francisco Republicans are “supporting” the current interim mayor. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Let’s keep the record straight. We have endorsed Tony Hall, we support Tony Hall and we encourage you to make Tony Hall your first choice for mayor.

SFGOP, Log Cabin Republicans, Nob Hill Republican Women and Young Republicans have all endorsed Tony Hall and no one else for mayor.

No handouts for me

I am not rich, but the Wall Street Occupiers do not speak for me and I am not part of their 99 percent.

I have come from being very poor as a child and have managed to advance to the middle class. This happened by hard work, carefully saving money, starting a small business and investing.

Now that I am a senior citizen I do receive Social Security that I paid into. But aside from that I have not received handouts, nor do I expect any handouts. This is the American way. Where do these protesters get the idea that that they are entitled to any kind of redistribution of money that the rest of us have earned through years of hard work?

And how dare the teachers, who are public employees supported by tax money, dare to take off a day from school to support this mob? It’s beyond outrageous.

Speier’s effort admirable

The Tuesday letter beating up on Rep. Jackie Speier for taking part in the Food Stamp Challenge reflects the all-too-common scenario of the left (of which I’m a proud member) to make the good the enemy of the perfect. The fact that Barbara Ehrenreich actually lived the life of a minimum-wage worker and wrote a brilliant book, “Nickel and Dimed,” doesn’t make Speier’s effort less worthy.

Far too many Congress members wouldn’t even give the plight of the working poor a second thought. Fortunately Speier is making that effort.

Would I prefer leaders more like Dennis Kucinich or Bernie Sanders in Congress? Yes, but I would much prefer more Jackie Speiers instead of the Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats filling the corridors of the Capitol.

Actually the letter-writer’s bit about Speier losing weight on food stamps and fitting better into holiday party gowns was pretty funny.
