Republican former Rep. Jim Greenwood, now a biotech lobbyist, shows up at Coakley fundraiser

Sen. John Kerry, who was recovering from hip surgery, didn't show up at the Martha Coakley fundraiser Tuesday night at Sonoma, a posh wine bar on Capitol Hill, but at least one Republican did: former Rep. Jim Greenwood, R-Pa.. The pro-choice Republican who cashed out to head the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), attended the $1,000-a-head fundraiser for health-care reform's 60th vote.

BIO's member companies might be the biggest winners from the health-care bill: not only do they pocket the drug subsidies, benefit from the mandates, and profit from the continued ban on reimportation, but they get 12 years of exclusivity (generics are banned) on biologic drugs.

It's surprising to see a Republican former member of Congress at a Democratic fundraiser in a tight race, until you realize how much his employer stands to gain from her election.
