Rec and Park to start charging for garden entry

The cash-strapped Recreation and Park Department will start charging a fee for nonresidents to enjoy the famed Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park.

It will cost $7 for adults, $5 for youth ages 12-17, $2 for children aged 5-11 and no charge for children 4 years old and younger. Families, defined as two adults and all children under 17 residing in the same household, would not be charged more than $15 to enjoy the area.

The Board of Supervisors approved the new fee in a second and final vote Tuesday.

The fee was approved in a 7-3 vote. Supervisors Eric Mar, Ross Mirkarimi and Bevan Dufty voted against the fee. Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier was excused from the meeting.
