Rancid ready to flex dormant tour muscles

It’s been a couple of years since we’ve heard from our hometown punk heroes Rancid. But their camp is suddenly abuzz with news.

Bassist Matt Freeman, of course, has stayed busy with his Devils Brigade side project, and guitarist Lars Frederiksen has spent his off hours raising his young son Wolfgang. But they’re returning to the battlefront with a new live CD/DVD on Hellcat this fall, plus a coveted opening slot on the upcoming Blink-182 comeback juggernaut.

Not a bad way to flex dormant tour muscles.

But Rancid is also doing a limited West Coast run of headlining dates, and they’ll be torpedoing into San Francisco’s Warfield on Sept. 10 (tickets go on sale July 17 via www.ticketmaster.com). And they have good reason to hit the road. As they’ve put it, it’s the perfect way “to help us get our chops up before going into the studio with Brett Gurewitz to record our eighth album.”

Projected release: Early 2012, with an accompanying (gasp!) 20th Anniversary World Tour. Has it really been that long?
