Quick spending: California localities rush to use redevelopment cash

WHAT: Across California, local governments are hurriedly transferring their redevelopment agency assets into city budgets to beat Gov. Jerry Brown’s proposed take-back of unspent redevelopment funds.

WHERE: Santa Clara redevelopment handed out $205 million plus 178 acres to city departments. Alameda County tied up $61.5 million and 11 properties. Similar payouts happened in Sacramento and Los Angeles last week.

WHAT’S NEXT: These maneuvers might not succeed. Brown’s proposed budget has language allowing some of the funding transfers to be reversed or to end up in court.
