Putting out financial fires

The growing budget problems at the San Francisco Fire Department will be the topic of the day at a special meeting on Monday. With sinking revenues due to a large decrease in fire inspection fees, an ongoing dispute with the PUC about some underground water, and The City’s general fund shortfall, the Fire Department is looking to close a $9 million deficit before the end of the fiscal year in June.  The only good news has been that the department has struck a deal with the mayor’s office to prevent any fire stations from closing. The public meeting is at the Fire Commission, 698 2nd St., at 4 p.m.
