Putting a price tag on hope

As Members of Congress consider restoring the successful D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program,  they should realize that these scholarships have a value for disadvantaged and disabled D.C. students and their families that goes far beyond the cost of the program.

By making it possible for them to attend private or parochial schools, OPS gives them a taste of the possibilities available to the educated and a way out of a hopeless, welfare-dependent life.

HotAir posted a letter from one D.C. parent explaining the positive ripple effect the voucher program has had on her family. Not only is her daughter applying for college, the mother has been inspired to pursue a career as a home health nurse:

These are things we never dreamed were possible before. I am extremely proud of my daughter, and she is proud of me.  Jerlisa’s scholarship has been worth so much more than $7,500.”
