Pullman play opens new Magic season

San Francisco’s Magic Theatre Wednesday announced its 2007-08 season. Opening in September and running through June 2008, the season, comprising mostly premieres, features Magic Theatre veterans along with Bay Area newcomers.

Among those newcomers is Bill Pullman, whose "Expedition 6," a stylish docu-drama, opens the season. The show, which runs Sept. 8 through Oct. 7, is about astronauts stranded on the International Space Station during the build-up to the Iraq War. Pullman created and directs the piece.

"The Crowd You’re in With" by Pulitzer Prize-nominated Rebecca Gilman, a Magic Theatre favorite, is about thirty-somethings facing parenthood. It runs Nov. 10 through Dec. 9.

"Territories" by Betty Shamieh ("The Black-Eyed") is a historic thriller set in the Middle East during the Crusades. It runs Jan. 12 through Feb. 10, 2008.

Edna O’Brien’s "Tir Na nOg ("Land of Youth") is an adaptation of the writer’s signature novel "The Country Girls," complemented by Irish music and dance. The show runs Feb. 23 through March 23.

"Monkey Room" by Kevin Fisher, a presentation of the Magic/Sloan Initiative, about an unorthodox HIV-research lab’s fight to keep its funding and find a vaccine. It runs April 5 to May 4.

"Birnham Woods" by Wendy MacLeod, a new drama by the award-winning author of the 1993 Magic play and indie favorite movie "The House of Yes," closes the season. Running May 10 through June 8, the Orwellian-themed show is about a woman whose dinner party takes an unexpected turn when her husband gets a lucrative offer from a mysterious organization.

Artistic Director Chris Smith called the season’s diversity "shocking," adding that the company is known for presenting a "world class, up close and unexpected" experience.

Founded in 1967, the Magic Theatre remains dedicated to presenting new works. The company’s honors include the Pulitzer Prize, Kennedy Center Award, NAACP Image Award, Obie Awards, Pen-West Awards, Bay Critics Circle Awards and Los Angeles Drama-Logue Awards. David Mamet, Sam Shepard, Paula Vogel, Nilo Cruz, Charles Mee and Anne Bogart are among its contributing playwrights.

Available now, six-play subscriptions range from $120 to $240 with flexible six-ticket passes from $144 to $264. Under-30 theatergoers can take advantage of a special membership and see three plays ("Expedition 6," "The Crowd You’re in With" and "Territories") for only $30.
