Prosecutors say East Palo Alto infant shooters pumped 15 bullets into car

The teen killers who outraged a community after slaying a 3-month-old child in East Palo Alto pumped 15 bullets into the car containing the boy and his family, according to prosecutors.

Murder suspect 17-year-old Fabian Zaragoza is being tried as an adult and is scheduled to enter his plea Wednesday.

In a case of mistaken identity, police say, Zaragoza and an accomplice opened fire on the family’s car, killing 3-month-old Izack Jimenez Garcia and injuring his mother and father. The child’s 4-year-old brother, shielded by his mom, was not harmed, police said.

The allegedly vengeful Zaragoza believed the people inside the car were gang members who had beaten him up in Redwood City the previous week, according to police.

Police said the family, a couple and their two young sons, did not know Zaragoza.

An outpouring of community tips led cops to Zaragoza and a second suspect, a 16-year-old boy who has yet to be charged in the crime, police said.

Zaragoza faces several charges, including murder with special circumstances of lying in wait and two counts of attempted murder. If convicted, he could face life in prison, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

His case is set for 1:30 p.m. in Redwood City Felony Court.

Zaragoza remains in custody on no bail status.
