Principal’s mistake causes kids to go hungry

A Chicago elementary school denied a free low-income breakfast to two eligible young brothers, ages 5 and 6, because they were wearing black athletic shoes instead of regular black dress shoes.

They went to class hungry and their surprised mother said the boys had worn the same shoes throughout the year with no hassles.

It was then discovered that the school’s dress code did not actually specify black dress shoes, and the principal apologized to the family.
