Presidio street closures begin

Motorists expecting to use Lincoln Boulevard in the Presidio will have to make new plans starting today.

Due to construction that’s part of the $1 billion plan to rebuild Doyle Drive, Lincoln Boulevard will be closed to traffic from McDowell Avenue to Montgomery Street in the Presidio. The street closure starts today and will last for the next 18 months, according to officials behind the project. Motorists should take the detour route from Halleck Street to Mason Street to avoid the construction.

Doyle Drive, the southern expanse to Golden Gate Bridge, was built in 1936, and numerous studies have found it to be seismically unstable. Nearly 120,000 vehicles use the 74-year-old state highway each day. The rebuild project is expected to be completed by 2014.
