Powering up The Rock

New energy is coming to Alcatraz Island.

The National Park Service is planning long-term changes on the island, including a move away from diesel generators.

Officials plan to lay a submarine power cable to connect with the mainland electrical grid and to install solar panels on top of the infamous prison.

A public meeting Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Moose Lodge in Pacifica has been scheduled to solicit feedback from residents regarding the likely impacts of the proposed electrical projects.
