Power pop rules at Slim's this weekend

Fans of melodic, hook-filled pop rock ought to hop over to Slim’s on Friday night, where the Southern California-based Mêlée headlines. The band is touring in the U.S. to promote its major-label debut album "Devils & Angels" before heading to Japan, where the genre boasts fanatic followers. The Orange County group includes vocalist-keyboardist Chris Cron, guitarist-vocalist Ricky Sans, bassist Ryan Malloy and drummer Mike Nader. Alternative Press named it a band "to keep your eye on," calling the album a "package of polished, piano-driven rock with a splash of goofball charm."

Opening for Mêlée is Matt White, a former New York busker whose new major label album is "Best Days." Named one of Rolling Stone’s 10 Artists to Watch, the magazine also says White "updates classic Billy-and-Elton-style Top Forty with Tears for Fears melodrama, Lovin’ Spoonful sunshine, even a touch of Freddie Mercury-style falsetto theatrics." White also appears Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Virgin Megastore, 2 Stockton St., where he’ll do an acoustic set and sign copies of his album.

The Slim’s show is at 8:30 p.m. at 333 11th St., San Francisco. Tickets are $13. Call (415) 255-0333 or visit www.slims-sf.com.
