Authorities say a power outage at the University of California at Berkeley led to an explosion and is prompting an evacuation of the campus.

UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof says the power outage was reported around 4:30 p.m. Monday and led to classes being cancelled as students were told to suspend all lab activities.

Mouglof and Berkeley acting fire Chief Gil Dong said that an explosion near California Hall was reported about two hours later.

Mouglof says a few people suffered minor injuries and at least one person was taken to a local hospital. Fire crews were also trying to free 20 people trapped in elevators on campus.

Mouglof says that the incident may have been caused by an attempted underground copper wire theft on campus last week.
