Police's AR-15 stolen

An AR-15 assault weapon was stolen from an unmarked police car over the weekend.

San Francisco police said Sunday night that the weapon — which gained notoriety last year in mass shootings in Aurora, Colo., and Newton, Conn. — was in a cop car that was parked and secured when suspects broke into the vehicle and snatched the weapon.

Other law enforcement agencies were alerted to the weapon’s disappearance. Police said “no resource is being spared” in an effort to recover the rifle.

The AR-15 is issued to officers who are specially trained to respond to rapid deployment incidents.

Anyone with information on this incident can call the Southern Police Station at (415) 553-1373 or the anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or text TIP411 and begin the message with “SFPD.”  — Staff report
