Police investigating two separate incidents of arson

Police are investigating two separate incidents of arson that occurred on Monday and early Tuesday.

The first incident occurred in Pacific Heights about 8:14 p.m. Monday night at the house made famous in the movie "Mrs. Doubtfire."

An 80-year-old man was cooking in the residence on the 2600 block of Steiner Street when he smelled what he thought was gasoline, police said. He went to his front door and saw that his door mat was on fire.

He put the fire out and called police. Although no one was taken into custody in the incident, police believe the suspect may have been a woman in her 40s.

The second case of arson occurred early Tuesday morning in the Financial District, police said.

In that case, it is suspected that two men set a Christmas tree on fire in the 500 block of Sansome Street about 3:20 a.m., police said.

The fire caused some structure damage to a nearby building, police said. The suspects in that case fled the scene and no arrests have been made.
