Police investigating a series of car fires in the Castro

Police are investigating four vehicle fires in the Castro early Wednesday, all within blocks of each other over a two-hour span, Sgt. Monica Macdonald said.

The first incident occurred about 4 a.m. in the area of Cumberland and Church streets, Macdonald said.

The next fire was discovered about three blocks away at 17th and Church streets about 4:44 a.m. There, a truck was on fire.

About 20 minutes later, police responded to another burning vehicle at Liberty and Rayburn streets, Macdonald said. And an hour later, police were back at the first block of Rayburn where another vehicle was ablaze.

Firefighters put out all the fires and advised police that the incidents appear to be arson.

Separately, another vehicle was set ablaze in the 500 block of Hamilton Street in the Portola neighborhood on Tuesday night about 6:30 p.m., and just after midnight Wednesday a portable toilet at 31st Avenue and Fulton Street in the Richmond district was set ablaze.

Police are investigating all of these as cases of arson and there are no known suspects at this time.
