Police identify man killed in house fire 

The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office has identified a man killed in a Redwood City house fire Friday as Manuel Vallejo, 54.

Vallejo was badly burned in the fire, which started in the garage where he was living part-time, Redwood City Fire Department Battalion Chief Steve Cavallero said.

Roughly 12 people were displaced by the Friday night fire at 571 MacArthur Ave.,though nine of those are expected to be able to return to their homes.

The man’s remains were not found until Saturday. Investigators estimate the fire caused approximately $50,000 in damages to the home’s structure, and $25,000 in damages to its contents.

Development firm to hold discussion on salt facility

DMB Associates and Cargill Salt will host a discussion regarding transportation on Wednesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Pacific Athletic Club, located at 200 Redwood Shores Parkway.

DMB Associates is the development firm Cargill has hired to run the public process associated with shutting down Cargill’s industrial-salt facility and determining the future use of the company’s 1,433-acre property. For more information, call (650) 593-4900.


Carlmont High teacher nominated for biotech award

Belmont teacher Kristina Doss, of Carlmont High School, has been named a finalist for the 2007 Genzyme-Invitrogen Biotech Educator Award.

The award was established by the national Biotechnology Institute to recognize leading high school educators who bring biotechnology into their classrooms.

Finalists are chosen from among 1,300 teachers with awards to be handed out May 5. First prize will take home $10,000, second prize $5,000 and third prize $2,500.
