Police Commission takes on Secure Communities

A federal program that would send information collected at San Francisco County Jail directly to immigration authorities is up for discussion at the next Police Commission meeting.

Immigrant advocates have been rallying to opt out of “Secure Communities,” which went into effect Tuesday. The program has been widely panned by San Francisco progressives while Mayor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Jerry Brown have been supportive of the idea.

The newest member of the commission, Angela Chan, has represented a number of families who have been threatened with deportation.
