A 26-year-old man was shot in the area west of Twin Peaks on Wednesday night -- and while officers were investigating, a car reportedly struck a police car while an officer was inside.

Officers arrived to the scene of Portola Drive and Santa Paula Avenue about 8:16 p.m. and discovered the victim next to a white vehicle, Officer Albie Esparza said in a statement. The victim sustained gunshot wounds to the torso.

Police learned that the shooting originally occurred at Manor Drive and Ocean Avenue. The suspect in the shooting was thought to be a man in his 30s wearing a dark hoodie and was seen fleeing in a white vehicle, Esparza said.

A bystander reportedly helped administer first aid to the victim, who was eventually taken to the hospital for his injuries, which are reportedly not life-threatening.

During the course of the investigation, an unrelated vehicle accidentally collided with a squad car, Esparza said. There was an officer inside the car who was not injured.
