Police have arrested a man in connection with a stabbing in the Polk Gulch neighborhood early Thursday morning, police Officer Gordon Shyy said in a statement.

According to witnesses, the suspect, identified by police as 36-year-old Sanchez Andrews of San Francisco, was trying to gain entry into a building in the 1000 block of Polk Street about 12:30 a.m., Shyy said. Andrews is alleged to have become irritated and caused a disturbance.

The 26-year-old victim in the stabbing was reportedly involved in an altercation with Andrews when he allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times.

The victim was taken to the hospital for his injuries, which were listed as critical, police said. However, he is expected to survive.

Andrews was booked into jail on assault with a deadly weapon and criminal threats charges, Shyy said.
