Police announce second arrest in homicide of Joe Hernandez

Police have made another arrest in the homicide of former UC San Francisco student Joe Hernandez, who was beaten to death Jan. 9, 2011, in a South of Market area nightclub, police said Monday.

Tracy Luong, 25, of San Jose, turned herself into police custody and was booked on charges of involuntary manslaughter, assault with a deadly weapon and battery causing serious injury.

Luong was originally arrested in May of 2011 on battery charges alleging that she had hit a bystander in the face with high-heel shoes. The bystander reportedly had stepped in to stop the attack on Joe Hernandez. Luong was reportedly part of the larger group that was assaulting Hernandez.

The incident happened at the Temple nightclub in the 500 block of Howard Street on a chaotic night where three separate fights had broken out both inside and outside the club.

Police announced on Friday the arrest of 36-year-old Dung Minh Nguyen, a Richmond resident. He was charged with voluntary manslaughter, assault with a deadly weapon, battery causing serious bodily injury and battery.

Hernandez was a fourth year UC San Francisco student at the time of his death. He volunteered as a disaster relief worker after Hurrican Katrina, and as a teen, he worked as an unpaid hospital volunteer. He received his degree posthumously in May 2011.
