Plans affecting Tonga Room to be discussed

Developers who want to destroy a historically significant Nob Hill neighborhood Tiki bar will appear before The City’s historic preservation commission on Wednesday.

The meeting is to discuss the proposed design of a remodeled and partially rebuilt Fairmont Hotel, which houses the Tonga Room.

The Tonga Room is slated to be destroyed during the conversion of the building from a hotel into a combined hotel-and-condo complex.

City planners recently ruled that the restaurant is historically significant and that its contents must be largely preserved, although they could be relocated.

The architectural review committee of the San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission is scheduled to discuss the plans at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday during a hearing at Room 400 in City Hall.
