Planning Dept. reconsiders EIR for Beach Chalet soccer fields

Animal advocates, soccer players and Golden Gate Park preservationists are not the only ones contemplating why the renovations for the Beach Chalet soccer fields were exempt from an Environmental Impact Report.

The Planning Department in 2007 initially waived the EIR under the impression that the changes would have a minimal impact on the park. But the Planning Department recently asked the Recreation and Park Department for additional documents, such as a biological assessment, to more thoroughly explain the effects of replacing the fields with synthetic turf and installing light fixtures.

After the Planning Department gets the documents, it will consider writing a certificate that could again excuse Rec and Park from an EIR. Or it could also decide an EIR is needed.

The Planning Department probably won’t decide until sometime in February.
