Plane loses power and crashes in strawberry field

A single-engine plane lost power south of Camarillo Airport and crashed into a muddy strawberry field.

The pilot of the Nemesis NXT racing plane suffered a minor leg wound. His name hasn't been released.

Ventura County fire Capt. Dan Preston says the plane was traveling at about 120 mph when it crashed Tuesday afternoon.

The plane's wings were sheared off as it traveled across the field and into a plastic-covered hoop shed where strawberries are grown.

No one on the ground was hurt.

The Ventura County Star ( ) says the pilot had been practicing takeoffs and landings in recent days at the airport.

Preston says the pilot reported landing gear trouble, then engine failure, before the crash.
