PG&E begins internal probe of gas line explosion

The Sept. 9 explosion of a pipeline in San Bruno has spurred federal and state investigations — and now an investigation by PG&E itself.

On Tuesday, the utility company announced that its board has retained a consultant to conduct an independent review of PG&E’s natural-gas transmission and distribution system practices in the wake of the incident that killed eight people and destroyed or severely damaged dozens of homes. The cause of the explosion is still unknown.
