Personal trainer whips stars into shape

Ed Downs, the personal trainer for new Warriors acquisition Corey Maggette, will appear Thursday on “View from the Bay” on KRON (Ch. 4). His Downs Discs are part of a core exercise program used by NBA stars, including ex-Warrior Baron Davis and Utah’s Carlos Boozer.

How does Corey Maggette look at this stage? He’s ready. He’s in better shape than he was at this time last summer, all-around. My goal was to teach him how important core weight training is.

Why is that? He’s [6 feet, 6 inches tall] and going to the [basket] all the time. A strong center [of the body] will help stabilize his body for all the bumps and bruises he will get driving down the lane.

What were his goals this summer? He wanted to get all-around better. He and Boozer are really close friends [both played at Duke].

How were his workouts? He wanted it. All of the guys in the NBA work hard, but only some guys want to be the All-Star player and he wants to have that and a long career.

Can you sum up the Downs Discs in one sentence? I would say it gives you a total-body workout in a fraction of the time.

How much time? In 30 minutes, I can do a total-body strengthening routine — upper body and abdomen. Guys are worn out at the end. They do it three to four times a week.
