Pentagon mum on series of meetings with top Egyptian military leader 

Defense Officials are giving few details about five private conversations between Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and the man who appears to be emerging as the new Egyptian leader Field Marshall Mohammed Tantawi, head of the Egyptian Defense Department.

"Secretary Gates spoke with Field Marshal Tantawi again last night," said U.S. Marine Corps Col. David Lapan, a senior Defense spokesman. "This was his fifth phone conversation with the Egyptian Defense Minister since the situation in Egypt began. I have no other details to provide."

Another defense official said the situation is very "fluid" the Defense Department continues to monitor it closely.
